Hypothesis 1: it was all a mass hallucination and the nanites caused the physical damage passengers suffered, effectively 'self inflicted' Hypothesis 2: the monsters were manifested via an unknown power (similar to magic conjuring or transfiguration) and thus the blood samples aren't 'real'.
As of the 34th jump (August 2014), these particular blood samples have vanished; the apparatus they were being held in remains, all the notes remain, the blood's just gone. Older samples of manticore blood from past incidents remain.
As of the 34th jump (August 2014), Severus has stepped out of the project now that magical testing is complete, and handed it over to Odessa and Samantha to pursue at their discretion.
