I've had a small number of very polite individuals attempt to explain it to me in terms of hard science, but as far as I can tell, they're referring to phenomena of their own worlds (that being, the occurrence of alternative universes). Similar to what you and I know, I'd wager, except-- imagine the future you hailed from and the future you woke up to co-existing on separate wavelengths.
But I think this place is another animal altogether. My ideas being: when this place produces people from the same universe, we're connected through familiarity. Anyone unfamiliar or completely removed of social acquaintance appears to come from a completely separate universe altogether. Now, if infinite variation is to be believed, then it's possible that some of these universes may vaguely resemble one another, i.e., the multitude of "earths", when there are those who hail from places where "earth" does not even exist. "Earth" being a rather mutable concept, of course, but other patterns may emerge: mutants, for example, or even people.
[There's a delay. It's quite a long one, because Logan reads the message in chunks, skirting on the edges of his patience. He'd asked, and he's used to the professor's long explanations, but reading is more effort than listening.]
[Though it's looking like that should be and, not or. Logan doesn't want to think about what that means. Patterns, Charles had said. That's a better word than fate.]

[ You had to ask, Logan. ]

So another me could show up.
[Or another Magneto. A bald one.]

Indeed. Or, based on what we're witnessing, someone who knows another you.

They're starting to ask about you.
